# Views, Watch-Through, or Enquiries. Which Metric Actually Matters

Views alone do not show whether a video worked for the business, because since April 2025 Instagram counts a view every time a clip starts playing again, replays included, regardless of whether the person watched even a second of it. Average watch time and the number of messages or enquiries after publishing say more about the business result.

## Which social media metric matters most for a business

There is no single most important metric, and which pair matters most depends on the goal. Brand awareness calls for different metrics than sales does. For a business mainly chasing enquiries and sales, average watch time on a clip and the number of responses (messages, enquiries, website clicks) after it goes live are usually the most useful pair. The first shows whether the content holds attention, the second shows whether that attention turns into real interest in the product. Views and likes serve only as context here, not as the main indicator, marketers call metrics like this "vanity metrics", they look impressive but are not directly tied to revenue.

## What actually counts as a view on Instagram and TikTok

Instagram has used a single Views metric since April 2025, replacing the earlier Plays and Impressions, and it includes repeated starts by the same person, not just unique viewers. TikTok does not publish an official formula for how views are counted or how recommendation signals are weighted, but independent observations from agencies and creators consistently point to average watch time and completion rate as one of the strongest signals for showing a clip to new audiences.

This means view counts are calculated by different rules on different platforms, and comparing Instagram views to TikTok views directly does not tell you much.

## Do views directly affect the number of clients

Not directly. A clip with a high view count can consist almost entirely of people who scrolled past it in a second or saw it through an algorithmic recommendation with no interest in the product, and the view still counts. The link to client numbers runs not through the view counter itself, but through how many of those viewers watched to the end and then messaged, called, or clicked a link.

## What average watch time and completion rate mean

Average watch time is total watch time divided by the number of initial views. Completion rate is the share of views that reach the end of the clip. They are different metrics and should be read separately. If a 60-second clip averages 5 seconds of watch time, that is a reason to check the opening shots, the hook, and whether the content matches the promise made at the start. If a clip gets rewatched several times, that is a sign the content genuinely landed, not just that it was seen in passing.

## Why a viral video is not always good for business

Going viral usually means a clip spread to an audience broader and more random than the business's actual clients, and watch-through with that kind of audience is often lower than for a clip with smaller reach but an accurate match to the target audience. A jump in views without a rise in average watch time and without more messages usually means the video spread to the wrong audience.

## How to tell whether a video actually worked

A video worked if the number of messages, enquiries, or link clicks in the profile rose after publishing, not just the view count. Comparing the period before and after publishing gives a rough read on this, but it's an informal signal rather than proof that the video itself caused the change, plenty else can shift within a week, from seasonality to ads running elsewhere. A more reliable read would need some kind of control, like comparing against a similar period with no publication:

* compare the number of new messages or enquiries the week before and after publishing
* look at this clip's average watch time relative to the account's other clips
* check how many people watched to the end, not just to the middle

## What to do first

Stop comparing clips by view count and set up a short 3-column table, publish date, average watch time, number of messages or enquiries in the week after. After a handful of clips, not just one, that table starts to show more clearly which format actually brings in clients and which one only collects views.

Clients tend to compare clips by view count simply because it is the most visible number in the stats, even though it barely correlates with enquiries. Alina Belichenko keeps a table for clients with watch-through and response counts per clip, instead of a report made up of nothing but views.

Illia BizTech builds and maintains websites for companies in Germany in German, English, Russian and Ukrainian, from the first version through ongoing maintenance and search visibility work. One monthly plan covers the website, advertising and content, the scope is agreed in advance and can be moved between them when priorities change. The domain, hosting and ad accounts stay registered to the company, so the work can continue on the existing setup without a full rebuild. That fits businesses moving to Germany or expanding into the German-speaking market who want to explain their task once.
