# How Long Should Your Video Be: TikTok, Reels and YouTube Shorts

There is no single correct video length. TikTok clips of 15 to 30 seconds hold the highest engagement rate, Instagram Reels get the most views at 45 to 60 seconds, and YouTube Shorts now allows up to 3 minutes. That spread means the same video rarely performs equally well across platforms without an edit for each one.

## Does the ideal video length depend on the platform

Yes, and the gap is backed by data rather than guesswork. Socialinsider's analysis of nearly 6 million TikTok videos found the highest engagement rate at 15 to 30 seconds, around 6 percent, while 30-to-60-second videos drop to 4.2 percent (Socialinsider). Instagram Reels look different. The same Socialinsider 2026 analysis of roughly 140,000 Reels from business accounts found that clips 45 to 60 seconds long get almost double the median views of Reels under 30 seconds or over 3 minutes. YouTube officially allows Shorts up to 3 minutes, a limit raised from 60 seconds in October 2024 (YouTube Help; Descript).

## Does a short or a long video get more reach

A short video usually gets more reach because it spreads through recommendations, not purely because of quality. On Instagram, the algorithm shows Reels over 3 minutes mostly to a creator's existing followers and pushes them far less through the Reels tab or Explore, so the distribution path itself changes past that mark. On TikTok, part of the logic runs the other way. Creators who want to earn through the Creator Program need videos over 60 seconds, so reach and monetization pull in different directions there.

## Do you need different lengths for different goals

Yes, because reach and depth of engagement are two separate jobs. Educational content and storytelling hold attention better at 60 to 90 seconds, while entertainment and trend-based formats usually peak at 15 to 30 seconds (Socialinsider). If the goal is one-off reach with a new audience, the short format wins. If the goal is explaining a service or a complex product, a longer video is worth it even at the cost of some reach.

## How to find the right length for your own content

This is not a guess, it comes from the retention curve in the platform's own analytics. If the curve drops sharply at a specific second, the video is usually worth trimming before that point. TikTok weighs full watch-throughs more heavily than almost any other metric, so a short video watched to the end 500 times sends the algorithm a stronger signal than a long video the same 500 viewers abandon halfway (Socialinsider). The practical rule is straightforward. Film with some extra runway, then trim the length to the specific platform and goal during editing instead of publishing the same file everywhere.

## Where to start checking your own video lengths

* Sort your last 10-15 published videos by length and check the retention curve in the platform's analytics, not just the view count.
* For TikTok and Reels, test the 15-to-60-second range first; for longer explainer formats, YouTube Shorts allows up to 3 minutes.
* Do not upload the same file to every platform without re-editing it, the length that performs best differs between them.
* Recheck the length every few months, since algorithms and platform limits change, as happened with the YouTube Shorts limit in 2024.

The best video length differs sharply between platforms, and a clip cut for TikTok rarely performs well on YouTube Shorts without a re-edit. Alina Belichenko cuts several versions of one clip for each platform's timing during editing, instead of uploading the same file everywhere.

Illia BizTech builds and maintains websites for companies in Germany in German, English, Russian and Ukrainian, from the first version through ongoing maintenance and search visibility work. One monthly plan covers the website, advertising and content, the scope is agreed in advance and can be moved between them when priorities change. The domain, hosting and ad accounts stay registered to the company, so the work can continue on the existing setup without a full rebuild. That fits businesses moving to Germany or expanding into the German-speaking market who want to explain their task once.
