An hour spent reshooting one short scene usually costs less than hours of manual audio or picture repair, because tools like iZotope RX or Adobe Audition's De-clip do not recover the lost signal, they only approximate it. As Emastered puts it, the software can only guess at what the signal would have sounded like without the distortion. ## How to Tell Footage Is Unusable If the flaw runs through an important scene and that scene is easy to reproduce, a reshoot is often more sensible than spending hours hiding it in the edit. If the flaw is local or the footage is unique and hard to repeat, first check whether editing, an alternate shot, or processing can hide the problem cleanly. * a face or key object out of focus in an important part of the scene * audio clipped through an entire line, not just a few peaks * no clean take available to replace the flawed one ## Can Bad Audio Be Fixed in Editing Background noise, room echo, and equipment hum genuinely come out in editing. The same source notes that the tool's V2 version can sometimes make a voice sound mechanical and creates artifacts in silent sections, and that running an already clean recording through it can make the sound worse. Clipped or heavily distorted audio is not something this or similar tools restore at all, that needs a reshoot or a new audio pass. ## What Post-Production Cannot Fix Being out of focus is not technically fixable, only maskable. Sharpening tools trick the eye because it naturally lands on the sharpest part of the frame first, but they do not bring the actual sharpness back (PremiumBeat). Separate from being out of focus is motion blur. DaVinci Resolve's AI Motion Deblur tool can noticeably reduce that specific kind of blur by analyzing the source file and re-rendering the frame (blackmagicdesign.com), but it does not remove it completely either, only reduces it. * an out-of-focus subject, maskable only on short clips * audio clipped through an entire line * no clean take left when the flaw is in every version of the scene ## When to Reshoot a Scene Instead A scene is worth reshooting when the flaw sits exactly where the video matters most, the moment the price is stated or the result is shown, because a flaw is most visible right there and editing cannot hide it behind a cutaway. If that same moment can be covered with an alternate shot, a voiceover, or graphics, editing is almost always faster than going back out to shoot. ## What to Check First When a Shoot Goes Wrong 1. Check the same day whether the flaw is out-of-focus footage or clipped audio, the two cases where a reshoot is almost always faster than a fix. 2. Review every take for a clean version before deciding on a reshoot. 3. Run the audio through noise reduction like Adobe Podcast Enhance Speech and judge the result before deciding, not after. 4.
