# The First Three Seconds of a Video. Why Viewers Leave Right There

Viewers decide whether to keep scrolling or stay within a fraction of a second, and that decision comes from the first frame and the first line, not from what happens later in the video.

## Why viewers leave at the start of a video

A short-video feed is built so the next video is always one swipe away, so there is no reason for a viewer to sit through a dull opening for the promise of something better later. They do not watch an intro to understand the context, they simply move to the next video if the opening frames give them no reason to stay.

This is not a punishment for bad content, it is natural behavior in an endless feed where there are always more options for the next swipe than there is time.

## What a hook in a video is

A hook is the first one to two seconds of a video that give the viewer a concrete reason to stay, an unexpected image, a direct question, a promise of a result, or a recognizable situation the viewer sees themselves in. A hook does not summarize the video's topic, it creates a question the viewer wants to see answered.

A hook works not because it is loud or flashy, but because it gives the viewer a specific reason to stay one more second, not because the video is technically polished.

## How to start a video without an intro

* Cut the logo, the music intro, or the line "hey, today I'll tell you about" before the actual content, none of it holds the viewer, it just spends the video's most expensive time
* Open directly with an action, a result, or a conflict tied to the topic, and add context or introductions only after the viewer has decided to stay
* Check the video's first second on its own, as if it were a single still frame, and ask whether that one frame alone would give someone a reason to stop scrolling

## What viewers actually notice in the first seconds

In the first seconds a viewer registers the big picture, not details, movement in the frame, a face, on-screen text if there is any, and whether they recognize the situation as relevant to them. That is why a static frame with text or a company intro almost always loses to a video that shows action or a result right away.

## Does a long intro hurt reach

Yes, because it takes from the video exactly the time in which the viewer is still deciding whether to stay. TikTok's [official description of its recommendation system](https://newsroom.tiktok.com/en-us/how-tiktok-recommends-videos-for-you) states directly that whether a user watches a video through to the end is a strong interest signal the platform factors in when showing that video to more viewers. If an intro or a long opening drives away part of the audience before the actual content starts, the video gets a weaker signal and, in turn, less reach.

## What to do first

If current videos open with a logo, a music intro, or a warm-up line before the content, the first step is cutting that and starting directly with an action or a specific result, moving the brand name or logo into the background of the frame or to the end instead. Alina Belichenko edits a video with no intro at all first, then decides afterward whether any branding is needed at the start.

A weak story is rarely the issue, usually the first seconds just go to a logo and an introduction instead of the strongest moment already sitting in the footage. Alina Belichenko finds that shot first when editing and puts it at the start, rather than following the order things were filmed in.

Illia BizTech builds and maintains websites for companies in Germany in German, English, Russian and Ukrainian, from the first version through ongoing maintenance and search visibility work. One monthly plan covers the website, advertising and content, the scope is agreed in advance and can be moved between them when priorities change. The domain, hosting and ad accounts stay registered to the company, so the work can continue on the existing setup without a full rebuild. That fits businesses moving to Germany or expanding into the German-speaking market who want to explain their task once.
