# What Separates Stories from Reels, and What to Post in Each

One of the main differences between Stories and Reels is lifespan and distribution. Stories disappear after 24 hours unless saved to Highlights, while Reels stay on the profile until they are deleted (help.instagram.com).

## What Separates Stories from Reels

The main difference is that content in Stories disappears after 24 hours unless saved to Highlights, while Reels behave like a regular post and stay on the profile until deleted (help.instagram.com).

Another difference is the audience they can reach. Reels can be shown to people who do not yet follow the account, including through recommendations and Trial Reels, while Stories mainly work with the existing audience.

## What to Post in Stories vs Reels

* Stories fit anything that loses value after a day: an announcement for today, a question for the audience, behind-the-scenes from a shoot, a reaction to news.
* Reels fit anything meant to keep working for months: a finished result, an explanation of a service, a case study, a video meant to bring in new followers through recommendations.

## Which Format New Viewers Actually See

Reels can reach non-followers. Trial Reels are one concrete example. The video is shown first to people who do not follow the account, metrics arrive after about 24 hours, and a decision about sharing it with followers can be made within 72 hours (about.fb.com, creators.instagram.com).

Stories have no equivalent mechanism. The format is built by nature for people who already decided to follow, not for a first encounter with an account.

## Do Reels Need Stronger Editing Than Stories

Reels compete for attention not just from existing followers but also from strangers in the recommendation feed, where the decision to stay or scroll past happens in a second, which is why tighter editing pays off there, shot changes, music on beat, a hand-picked cover. Stories are watched mostly by followers already interested in the account, so a rougher, handheld format does not hurt there and can even feel more personal.

## How to Decide Where Content Goes

* If the material loses value after a day or two, it belongs in Stories.
* If the material is still interesting a month later, it belongs in Reels.
* If the goal is bringing in new followers, choose Reels, because that is where distribution to strangers is built in.
* If the goal is keeping in touch with existing followers, Stories work faster and need less editing effort.

## What to Decide First When Planning Content

1. Split upcoming content ahead of time into what lives for a day and what should keep bringing views for months.
2. For videos aimed at new viewers, turn on the testing feature for non-followers where available, instead of releasing straight to everyone.
3. Do not skimp on editing where a video will show up for the first time in recommendations, because the decision to watch happens in a second.
4. Decide in advance which Stories are worth keeping past 24 hours in Highlights, instead of deciding at the last moment.

The problem is almost never a shortage of content for Stories and Reels, it is that both formats get filled with the same material without any thought. Alina Belichenko marks during the shoot itself which shots are only good for a day and which are worth cutting separately as a Reel.

Illia BizTech builds and maintains websites for companies in Germany in German, English, Russian and Ukrainian, from the first version through ongoing maintenance and search visibility work. One monthly plan covers the website, advertising and content, the scope is agreed in advance and can be moved between them when priorities change. The domain, hosting and ad accounts stay registered to the company, so the work can continue on the existing setup without a full rebuild. That fits businesses moving to Germany or expanding into the German-speaking market who want to explain their task once.
