# A Local Micro-Influencer Instead of Advertising: What Changes

A micro-influencer has roughly 10,000 to 100,000 followers, and according to the Captiv8 report, such accounts hold a 3.86 percent engagement rate on Instagram, compared to 2.80 percent for accounts above 1.5 million followers (according to Captiv8).

## What sets a micro-influencer apart from standard advertising

The difference is not the budget, it is the source of trust. A company pays for and fully controls an ad, while a micro-influencer's post is still read by followers as one person's own opinion, even when it is paid. In the same Captiv8 data set, nano accounts under 10,000 followers on Instagram show an even higher 6.23 percent engagement rate, confirming that a smaller audience often means a closer relationship with it, not less value.

## Is it worth working with a local micro-influencer

It is worth it if a business is tied to a specific city or district. A local account brings an audience that can actually walk in or book a service, not just watch a video. Unlike advertising to a broad audience, a local micro-influencer's followers are real neighbors, coworkers, and acquaintances, which for a local business is worth more than reach in another city.

## Do you have to pay the influencer, or does a product swap work

A product swap works, but legally it counts the same as payment. Under a German Federal Court of Justice ruling (BGH, "Influencer III", January 13, 2022, Case I ZR 35/21), a free product sent by a company expecting the influencer to talk about it counts as consideration and triggers the same disclosure duty as a cash payment (wbs.legal). The Karlsruhe Higher Regional Court (OLG Karlsruhe) went further. A disclosure duty can arise even without direct payment if expenses, meals, or travel connected to the post were covered (Wettbewerbszentrale).

## Does the collaboration with an influencer need to be disclosed

Yes, as soon as the influencer received money, a product, or any other benefit for the post. This rule applies the same regardless of audience size, it is based on § 5a UWG and covers both a 500,000-follower account and a local micro-blogger with 3,000 followers. Under the current Wettbewerbszentrale guidance, the recognized minimum standard is the word "Werbung" or "Anzeige" at the start of the post, and hashtags like #ad or #sponsored are not accepted as sufficient by German courts (Wettbewerbszentrale guide, August 27, 2024). The exact labeling formats across platforms are already covered in a separate blog post on advertising disclosure, what matters here is that the rule applies to local collaborations too, not only to large campaigns.

## Who does working with local bloggers actually suit

It suits businesses with a physical location (a cafe, salon, workshop, or shop) in a small or mid-sized city, where a local blogger's audience overlaps with real potential customers. For a business operating nationwide or online with no tie to a specific place, a local micro-influencer brings less value, and a collaboration with topically matched rather than geographically matched bloggers makes more sense there.

This section explains the requirements under § 5a UWG and the BGH ruling in general terms and is not a substitute for legal advice. Before starting an influencer collaboration, have the exact disclosure format checked by a lawyer, especially for a regular collaboration or one spanning several platforms at once. A similar consent question comes up with videos from customers themselves, which also need separate permission to use, not just a tagged mention of the business.

A local micro-influencer with 3,000 to 5,000 followers in their own city often brings more response than advertising to a broad audience with no local tie. Alina Belichenko picks such accounts by geography and real engagement, not by the follower count shown on the profile.

Illia BizTech builds and maintains websites for companies in Germany in German, English, Russian and Ukrainian, from the first version through ongoing maintenance and search visibility work. One monthly plan covers the website, advertising and content, the scope is agreed in advance and can be moved between them when priorities change. The domain, hosting and ad accounts stay registered to the company, so the work can continue on the existing setup without a full rebuild. That fits businesses moving to Germany or expanding into the German-speaking market who want to explain their task once.
