# Organizing Raw Footage So Your Editor Does Not Waste Time

A file named \`DSC-000001.MOV\` tells an editor nothing, and the time gets lost not on editing but on figuring out what is even in that shot, which is why organizing raw footage saves time before the work starts, not during it.

## How to organize raw footage for editing

A working structure starts with a handful of top-level folders, not one big pile. In the layout described by [MASV](https://masv.io/blog/how-to-organize-media-folders), it helps to split the archive into a folder for active projects and a separate library of reusable assets, music, LUTs, and branding that repeat across projects. Inside a project itself, [Iconik](https://www.iconik.io/blog/10-tips-to-organize-video-files-for-faster-edits) recommends separate subfolders for raw footage, graphics, audio, and final exports, with raw footage further split by shoot day or camera.

Once a structure works, it is worth saving it as an empty template and copying it for every new project instead of rebuilding it from scratch each time.

## Does footage need sorting before it goes to the editor

Yes, and it saves time for the editor specifically, not for whoever filmed it. If an archive mixes duplicates, unusable takes, and usable footage together, the editor spends the first hours not editing but figuring out what can even be used. It is enough to review the material once, remove the obvious throwaways, and group the usable takes by scene, picking the single best take is not required at that stage and can stay the editor's job.

## How to name video files

* Include the project name, shoot date, location, and shot or angle number in the filename, for example \`ProjectX\_2024-06-10\_Cafe\_Interview\_Angle1.mov\`, an example [Iconik](https://www.iconik.io/blog/10-tips-to-organize-video-files-for-faster-edits) gives directly
* Do not keep the names a camera or phone assigns automatically, such as \`DSC-000001.MOV\`, they say nothing about content or shoot date
* Give top-level folders a number prefix, such as "01-Project," "02-Footage," "03-Assets," so the order stays fixed under alphabetical sorting, an approach also described by [MASV](https://masv.io/blog/how-to-organize-media-folders)

## Where to store raw footage

The practice MASV describes splits storage into two parts, a folder for active and completed projects and a separate library for reusable assets, music, templates, and documents needed across projects. Keeping them separate cuts down on duplicate files and keeps the archive from turning into one unsorted folder.

When handing a large batch of footage to an editor, it is worth applying that same folder structure at the point of upload, rather than resorting the material after it has already been sent.

## Does organizing files actually save editing time

Yes, though the exact amount depends on how much was shot. Both Iconik and MASV agree that a structure planned in advance lets you find the right shot without extra searching and directly affects whether an editor makes the deadline. The reverse holds too, the more footage sits without structure, the more time an editor spends not on the creative work but on simply finding the right clip.

## Getting Started

If raw footage currently gets dumped into one folder after every shoot, the first step is setting one folder template and one file naming format and reusing it for every future shoot instead of reinventing it each time. Alina Belichenko asks clients to hand over footage already in that structure, and on her own shoots sorts and renames the footage the same day it was filmed rather than putting it off until editing begins.

The problem is almost never a shortage of footage, it is that it reaches the editor as one large folder with no names attached. Alina Belichenko sorts and renames footage on the day it was shot, not on the day editing is due to start.

Illia BizTech builds and maintains websites for companies in Germany in German, English, Russian and Ukrainian, from the first version through ongoing maintenance and search visibility work. One monthly plan covers the website, advertising and content, the scope is agreed in advance and can be moved between them when priorities change. The domain, hosting and ad accounts stay registered to the company, so the work can continue on the existing setup without a full rebuild. That fits businesses moving to Germany or expanding into the German-speaking market who want to explain their task once.
