# How long a website can take to load before visitors leave

Research consistently shows a significant share of visitors abandon a page that has not become usable on mobile within three seconds, and each additional second beyond that keeps losing another noticeable slice of the audience.

Loaded and usable are not the same thing. Many pages paint a first image quickly, but buttons stay unresponsive until every script has finished loading, and a visitor judges by when the page actually reacts to clicks, not by the first pixel on screen.

The most common real cause on small business sites is oversized, unoptimised images straight from a phone or a stock library, often several megabytes each, loaded at full size and simply squeezed into a smaller box by CSS.

The second common cause is too many third party scripts loading up front, chat widgets, tracking pixels, font and icon libraries, each adding its own request before the page becomes usable.

The third cause is the server's own response time, cheap shared hosting or a server physically far from the visitor's country adds delay before the browser gets anything at all.

Checking this takes a couple of minutes, open the site on a phone over mobile data instead of Wi-Fi and judge the time by feel, or run the page through a free tool that reports the same time-to-usable figure.

It is worth starting with the images, since that is the fastest fix with the most visible effect, compressing and correctly sizing images usually cuts out the largest chunk of load time.

This is not a one-time fix, a site that was fast at launch quietly grows heavier over time as new stock photos, plugins, tools and tracking scripts get added, so it is worth repeating the same two minute check periodically.

The speed check takes less time than the conversation about why a site is not bringing in enquiries, and it is often the first and fastest answer.

Load time rarely gets checked while a site is still being built and images are still uploaded at full size. Illia BizTech compresses and correctly scales images during the site build itself, rather than fixing that later as a separate paid project.

Illia BizTech builds and maintains websites for companies in Germany in German, English, Russian and Ukrainian, from the first version through ongoing maintenance and search visibility work. One monthly plan covers the website, advertising and content, the scope is agreed in advance and can be moved between them when priorities change. The domain, hosting and ad accounts stay registered to the company, so the work can continue on the existing setup without a full rebuild. That fits businesses moving to Germany or expanding into the German-speaking market who want to explain their task once.
