# MovePilot, a moving quote in under a minute

A calculator for a removals company. The customer answers four groups of questions and watches the figure change, and the company receives an enquiry that already carries the volume, the route and the floors.

## The problem

### The customer stays with whoever answered first

Almost every enquiry to a removals company starts the same way. Someone asks the price and writes nothing beyond the name of the town.
To answer it, the company needs the volume, the floor, whether there is a lift, the distance, and a dozen details such as a piano or a parking space outside the door. All of it gets drawn out by hand, one question per email.
While that exchange drags on, the customer writes to three more companies and usually stays with the one that named a price sooner.
The company needed a way to collect all of it without staff time and to show the rough figure straight away.

The difficulty is that a move does not fit into a short form. Too many conditions genuinely affect the price.
So the questions were split into groups and everything that does not change a first estimate was taken out.

* An estimate without staff involvement
* An enquiry with volume, floors and route
* A clear answer within the first minutes

### The total moves as the answers come in

The total is recalculated after every answer. The customer sees how the floor, the lift or the distance affects it well before reaching the end.

A mistake costs nothing. Any answer can be changed and the shift in the total shows immediately.

## The solution

### Four groups of questions instead of a questionnaire

The questions follow the order in which people think about a move themselves, from the home itself to the details of loading.
Within each group the customer picks from ready options. Nothing has to be measured or written down in advance.
The things that usually surface at the last moment are gathered separately. A piano, a safe, fragile goods, a parking space for the van outside the door, kitchen assembly.
These are exactly the items that most often upset an agreed price when they only come up on moving day.

Distance is taken roughly. For a first estimate the difference between 10 and 50 kilometres matters, between 47 and 52 it no longer does.
The floor and the access to the building count separately, because carrying up to a third floor without a lift takes noticeably longer than carrying out at street level.

Each group stands for its own part of the work, so the total is built from quantities the customer can follow.

## How a move is priced

### What the price is made of

[ Home and volume The type of home and the number of rooms. The volume in cubic metres is worked out from those.](#tab1)[ Route The distance between the two addresses. It is taken roughly, accuracy to the kilometre does not change a first estimate.](#tab2)[ Floors and access The floor, whether there is a lift, and the distance from the door to the vehicle.](#tab3)[ Extra services Packing, furniture assembly, a reserved parking space outside the door, and heavy items.](#tab4)

## The result

### The estimate turns into an enquiry

Once the figure suits them, the customer leaves their contact details. Every answer goes out with it.
Whoever opens the enquiry has the full picture of the move in front of them. The first reply can go straight to the point.
Some conversations end at the calculator itself. Anyone whose budget sits well below the real cost filters themselves out and takes up no staff time.

All of it opens on a phone and on a computer, and the calculation can be printed and taken along.
The calculator switches language completely.
