Our supplier business makes precision parts for companies connected to the microelectronics industry in Dresden, whose own association counts more than 750 members. We spend a modest four-figure sum a year on our website, online presence and digital processes, while larger customers from the same industry are clearly investing very different amounts.

Is that gap normal, or are we missing something fundamental?

A real gap is genuinely the norm here. KfW Research's Mittelstand digitalisation report for 2025, published in April 2026, puts total Mittelstand digitalisation spending for 2024 at 23.8 billion euros.

The same report shows a real imbalance in how that spending is distributed. Businesses with fewer than five employees make up 73% of Mittelstand companies running digitalisation projects. Yet they account for only 24% of total digitalisation spending, down from 31% back in 2016\. The gap has widened over time as a result.

A modest four-figure sum for a supplier with only a handful of employees fits that pattern closely. The gap to larger buyers in the same industry does not close on its own.
