# Someone calls claiming to be Google and wants money for a better spot on the map

A caller promises a better position for a fee, while the business does receive genuine automated calls from Google.

Every now and then somebody calls us, says they are Google and offers a better position on the map for a monthly fee. Colleagues tell me Google never calls at all, so this is always a scam.

At the same time we have had calls where somebody wanted our opening hours confirmed. Which of the two is real?

Both exist, and Google keeps them apart on two of its own help pages. The genuine calls run automatically and have details about your business confirmed, and nothing is being sold on them.

The telltale sign sits in Google's own wording about suspicious calls. It states that you will never be asked for payment information over the phone and never be guaranteed preferred placement in its products, and the advice is to hang up and press no buttons.

That gives you one sentence any stand-in on the phone can apply. The moment money or a place on the map comes up, the conversation is over. A question about opening hours may be answered, and it then lands in the profile as collected information.
