# On my phone ChatGPT names our house, guests tell us the opposite. How can both be true?

I ask on my phone for a good restaurant nearby and get our house named. Guests tell us they asked the same question and did not get us.

Who is right, and how do we test this properly?

Both are right, you are simply not asking the same question. An assistant does not know by itself where you are standing. Several trade outlets reported consistently that OpenAI introduced device location sharing at the end of March 2026, expressly as an optional feature that stays switched off until the user turns it on.

Your own history comes on top of that. An account in which the house has been discussed for months is not a neutral test bench, and the name appears in the answer there even where it would not for a stranger. A usable test therefore has three conditions. A fresh window with no sign-in, the place name written out in the question where nearby would otherwise stand, and identical wording on every run. Doing that three times on different days separates fluctuation from pattern.
