A ready-made service embedded with code, answering automatically. The original text talks about high-risk systems, providers and deployers, and nobody knows where they stand.

There is a chatbot on our website. It answers standard questions about our services and opening hours; we put it in last year.

Now everyone is talking about transparency requirements from August. I went and read the original text and sank: it is all about high-risk systems, providers and deployers, and I cannot work out which of those we are. The bot is not ours, it is a ready-made service and we simply put the code on the page.

Do we need to do anything, and if so what?

Yes, if the bot answers automatically and that is not obvious to the visitor.

The requirement is in [Article 50(1) of the AI Act](https://ai-act-service-desk.ec.europa.eu/en/ai-act/article-50). The point of it is this: where a system is built to interact directly with people, the person has to be able to tell they are talking to a machine. The one exception applies where that is obvious from the circumstances anyway. The duty falls on the provider of the system, but it achieves nothing if there is no notice on your page. The requirements apply from 2 August 2026\. In practice the notice lives in two places. A label beside the chat window, visible before anybody starts typing, and the bot's first reply, in which it identifies itself. If the window only opens on a click, the label belongs inside the window; nobody reads it outside.

That the bot is bought ready-made and embedded with code does not take your page out of the picture. It is your website that is talking to the person.
