# Our call ads only get silent robocalls that still get billed as a call

A business's Google call ads mostly bring in silent robocalls that still count as a billable call.

Our Google call ads keep bringing in calls from bots. These calls get counted as a call in the ad and end up costing us a lot of money. When you pick up, there are a few seconds of silence, then the caller hangs up.

How do we get rid of this?

We work in water damage restoration.

For standard call ads in Google Ads, there's no automatic detection-and-credit system comparable to click fraud protection that reliably filters out individual fraudulent calls and refunds their cost. Google itself points out in these cases that advertising can't guarantee valid or successful calls, which in practice means accepting that some share of billed fake calls comes with no real way to get the money back.

Account hygiene can still be improved in a targeted way. The search terms report often shows exactly which queries the bot calls are coming in through, which lets you exclude those terms as negative keywords. Adjusted schedules and excluded geographic areas for ad delivery help too, along with higher bids to land in more valuable auctions with generally more serious callers.

Another technical filter is setting a minimum call duration as a condition for counting a call as a conversion, since a call that cuts off after a few seconds of silence usually differs noticeably in length from a real customer conversation. That reduces how many bot calls get counted as valuable in your reporting, but the basic billing itself still happens per call regardless of whether it was genuine.
