# Could we get in trouble with Google if our pages for Hainichen and Frankenberg look too similar?

A business based in Chemnitz built pages for Hainichen and Frankenberg/Sachsen with a similar structure and is worried Google will penalize them for it.

We're based in Chemnitz and regularly serve Hainichen and Frankenberg/Sachsen as well. We built a separate page for each town, with a similar structure due to time constraints and only a handful of genuinely different paragraphs.

A friend warned us that Google might treat such near-identical pages as duplicate content and rank them worse because of it. Writing completely different copy for each individual town would take a lot of time at our size.

Do we actually need to worry about a ranking penalty here, or is that overblown?

A penalty purely for similar pages is barely supported in practice, several experienced practitioners have checked this against their own cases involving a hundred town pages and found no such effect. When a page like that ranks poorly, the cause is usually something else entirely, competing with the business's own page for a different town, or simply too little genuinely distinct content.

The real risk here isn't technical, it's about substance: someone from Hainichen notices right away whether a page was actually written for their town or is just a template with the name swapped, and that's what actually decides trust and whether they get in touch, regardless of any ranking penalty.

A safe middle path is to describe the core service well once, then add just one short, genuinely town-specific paragraph for Hainichen and one for Frankenberg, instead of writing an entirely separate page for each town.
