Out of curiosity I asked ChatGPT about our business. The answer reads smoothly and describes surroundings that do not exist here.

How does something like that come about, and what can we do about it?

Two things meet here. Before searching, ChatGPT turns your question into one or more of its own, more targeted queries and adds a general location that it derives itself. What gets retrieved afterwards hangs on those self-built phrasings.

The second part is a quirk of the place name. Coburg exists in more than one place, the same spelling belongs among others to a suburb of Melbourne, and in Google's geo-targets the name appears more than once. A place name used in more than one country gives a machine search every opportunity to reach into the wrong region.

What works against the mix-up is being unambiguous on your own pages. District, state and country belong in the running text, and a legal notice page on its own does not carry them far enough. Neighbouring towns, streets and routes that exist here alone belong there too. The more firmly your page ties itself to the right area, the less room is left.

An error rate cannot be derived from this, since the mechanism is verified and its frequency is not. The only way to keep watch is to ask regularly yourself and record the answers.
