We asked ChatGPT about our business in Aue-Bad Schlema and got a noticeably outdated answer, with old opening hours. A colleague later asked almost the same question slightly differently and got a current, correct answer.

How can the same AI give such different answers to almost the same question? Is that on us, or on the AI itself?

That's genuinely down to a technical quirk of ChatGPT itself. Your business has nothing to do with it. ChatGPT decides fresh and on its own for every single query whether a live web search is needed, or whether to fall back on frozen training knowledge that has a cutoff date somewhere in the past.

Depending on how a question is phrased, the model recognizes the need for current information more or less clearly, a phrasing that sounds more tied to the present moment tends to trigger an actual web search more than a generally worded question does. Other systems like Perplexity or Google's AI Overviews are built from the ground up to lean more heavily on continuous live retrieval.

In practice, that means a single test with ChatGPT says little about actual AI visibility, since the result depends heavily on how the question happened to be phrased.
