# An AI turns a sentence on our site into its opposite

A sentence about our services allows two readings, and the AI picks the wrong one.

We are a painting and decorating firm.

Our services page has said for years that we take on wallpapering as part of a full refurbishment. An AI assistant turns that into us not wallpapering at all.

We have been hanging wallpaper for twelve years. Nothing on the page is wrong, and the customer still ends up with the opposite.

The sentence is probably not wrong. It is only ambiguous. A person reads it with the rest of the page in mind. A system reads it without that connection, and one of the two readings is what ends up in the answer. We saw this in a test of our own across ten businesses. It produced 43 statements that appear nowhere on the website of the business concerned. Statements like those are what people call AI hallucinations. More than once the page carried a sentence that allowed two readings, and the answer went with the less favourable one. Ten businesses do not prove a cause. It did come up more than once.

The remedy is unremarkable. Take the statement that comes back wrong and write it as a short sentence of its own, with no subordinate clause and no qualification. A plain list of the work you do leaves less room than an elegant paragraph.

Whoever wrote the services page reads their own sentence with everything around it in mind. An AI system does not have that connection. In a test across ten businesses, 43 statements came back that appear nowhere on the website concerned.

The fix is cheap once you know where to apply it. Give the claim that keeps arriving wrong a line of its own, stripped of conditions, and let the conditions live in their own sentence afterwards. Finding which line caused it is the slow part, because nothing on the page is marked as the culprit.
