We are a medical supplies retailer with four branches. In September 2026 a provider brought us a twelve-month contract that would place us permanently in the AI overview above the search results.

The presentation showed two screenshots with a competitor sitting there. It sounds plausible to us, and we have no way of judging it.

A screenshot is the weakest argument available here, and Google explains why itself. The overview is not a property your website can hold. It is a decision taken afresh for every query.

Google writes that such an overview appears only when its systems judge it additive to classic Search, and adds in the same sentence that it often does not trigger. A twelve-month contract is therefore selling you a state that does not exist.

The figures circulating in presentations like these deserve placing. The best known comes from the Pew Research Center and rests on the browsing of adults in the United States during March 2025\. The dataset holds 68,879 searches, of which 12,593 carried an AI summary, and on pages with a summary a traditional result was clicked in 8 percent of visits against 15 percent without one.

Those are numbers from one month, one country and one panel. An agency that tracks the same figure continuously reports from its own dataset that the decline has so far turned the other way during 2026\. Anyone selling one of those figures as present-day German behaviour has not read it.

Before signing, ask to be shown which queries are meant, how often the overview appeared for them during the measured period, and where that observation came from. Silence there answers the question. An overview is decided at each individual search. Google describes it as something that appears only when its systems judge it additive to the classic results, and notes in the same place that it frequently does not trigger at all.

That settles what a screenshot can demonstrate, which is one moment. Click figures quoted in sales material usually come from American panels covering single months. Without the market, the month and the sample stated alongside, such a number is no argument for a German business.
