After a location closed, another company renamed the old Google listing, reviews included, instead of creating its own.

We closed one location but never touched the Google listing for it. A few months later a different company with a similar business moved into the same premises.

Searching our old company name now brings up the new name, with our old reviews and photos sitting underneath. It looks like the new company simply renamed our listing instead of creating one of its own.

Is that even allowed, and how do we get it undone?

It isn't allowed, and Google draws a clear line between two situations. On your own rebrand, the old listing can be marked permanently closed. On a genuine change of ownership, the new operator can take over the same listing. What happened here is neither: an unrelated company simply helped itself to your listing, reviews and photos included.

This can be reported. Through the suggest an edit icon or the Business Profile help centre, you can claim the listing as yours and describe what happened. Screenshots of how things looked before help, especially if you still have access to an old account or old search results.

Alongside that, it's worth setting up a fresh listing for your company's current address or location, so customers can find you regardless of how this dispute plays out. The longer the wrong attribution stands, the more new reviews pile up under the wrong name, and the harder it gets to untangle later.
