# A monthly report counts Google-Extended, and the log knows no such name

A figure arrives from the contractor every month, and that name appears nowhere in the raw file.

Since the start of 2026 we have received a monthly report on AI requests. It carries a line for Google-Extended with a figure that moves month to month.

I went through our raw log myself across several months. That name is not in it once. Have I filtered it wrongly?

Your filter is fine. Google's crawler documentation, last updated 14 July 2026, states that Google-Extended has no separate HTTP request user agent string. The fetching is done with existing Google user agent strings, and the name exists only as a control word inside robots.txt.

A figure under that name therefore cannot have come from a log file. It is either derived from something else or simply asserted. Ask your contractor which raw log line sits behind it, and ask to see that line.

A second sentence on the same page is worth quoting, because it is often sold the other way round. Google-Extended does not affect a site's inclusion in Google Search and is not used as a ranking signal there. What the control word governs is training and grounding for Gemini applications.

For whether you appear in the AI results of Search itself, a separate setting in Search Console governs that, and it is a different lever entirely. Google-Extended is a control word and was never a visitor. Google's crawler documentation records that it has no separate HTTP request user agent string and that fetching happens with the company's existing agent strings.

Two things follow. A report counting requests under that name cannot have taken them from a log file. And the control word itself governs training and grounding, while inclusion in Google Search and ranking within it stay outside its scope.
