# A competitor took over our Google listing and swapped the name and phone number for their own

A competitor took over a business's Google listing and replaced its name and phone number with their own, while Google support seems unable to grasp the problem.

We noticed that the name and contact details on our Google listing had been changed. When we tried to fix it in the management dashboard, the status just said 'Duplicate.' A competitor changed the name to a keyword and swapped the phone number and website for their own.

Google support doesn't seem to understand the situation and keeps telling us to just 'request access,' as if we were a stranger and not the actual owner.

How do we get out of this dead end?

A case where your own listing has been taken over by someone else and overwritten with their contact details often gets misread by regular support, because the standard 'request access' form assumes a stranger wants access to a listing that isn't theirs, when here it's actually the reverse. That wrong starting assumption is exactly what produces the endless loop of the same stock replies.

The more effective approach is to frame the case explicitly as an account takeover and immediately provide concrete proof of your own original ownership, such as old invoices tied to your number, earlier screenshots of the listing with the correct details, or a business registration under your company name. The Google Business Profile Community and its Product Experts often take escalated, clearly documented cases like this more seriously than the regular phone hotline does.

It's also worth filing a formal report through Google's own form for brand abuse or impersonation, since that path gets handled technically differently from a normal support request. A quick fix isn't guaranteed even so, as the real case shows, where the owner ended up convinced that support never actually grasped what had happened.
