# Does the cookie banner go away now that there is a new consent regulation?

Our sales director asks every two months when it gets switched off. The consent tool costs 39 euros a month and the sources online contradict each other.

Our sales director read a newsletter saying cookie banners would be replaced by central consent services. Since then he has asked every two months when we are finally switching ours off.

We currently pay 39 euros a month for a consent tool and would happily be rid of it. The pages I find say either "the end of the banner flood" or "nothing changes for you".

I need an answer I can give in a meeting without the discussion starting up again in three months.

The sentence for your meeting is this: nothing changes for us, because taking part is voluntary.

The consent management regulation has applied since 1 April 2025 and is addressed to services that manage consent centrally. It creates no obligation for website operators. [Section 18(1) EinwV](https://www.gesetze-im-internet.de/einwv/%5F%5F18.html) says so in a single line: integrating recognised services is voluntary. I have read the provision in full; it is one sentence long and leaves no room for interpretation. These services are recognised by the Federal Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information under [Section 8 EinwV](https://www.gesetze-im-internet.de/einwv/%5F%5F8.html). The first service was recognised in November 2025\. That is still a long way from an ecosystem capable of replacing your banner.

Your sales director's instinct is sound, though, it is simply aimed at the wrong thing. The question that could actually save you the 39 euros is not about the regulation. It is whether your site loads anything requiring consent in the first place. A site with no tracking, no third-party fonts and no embedded maps or videos needs neither a banner nor a tool.

To stop the discussion returning in three months, give it an end date: we will check again in the spring whether recognised services exist in any number. Until then it stays as it is.
