We wanted to set up Google Local Services Ads for our trade business in Leipzig, assuming it would work roughly like a normal Google Ads campaign.

Instead, the company itself, the owner and every individual tradesperson on our team are now being asked to go through an external background check, including identity and criminal history.

Is that normal for this ad format, and how long does something like that usually take?

Yes, that's normal, Local Services Ads is a structurally different product from a regular Google Ads campaign, the difference runs far deeper than the ad format alone. It's billed per genuine lead instead of per click, and in exchange the listing carries a 'Google Guaranteed' badge, and that badge specifically requires the company, the owner and every worker listed on the profile to be checked through an external vendor, typically taking three to four weeks.

Real accounts point to a trap worth knowing about in advance, though. Using the same email address for the new signup as an earlier, unrelated Google Ads account can let an unpaid balance on that old account block activation, even once the check itself has long been passed.
