Google explicitly bans social media page links in the website field, a separate social profiles section exists for exactly that purpose.

Our tailoring and alterations shop in Dresden has never needed its own website. All news and example photos run through Instagram. The website field on our Google profile still sits empty, and we are considering simply putting the Instagram link there.

Is there anything technical or rule-based against doing that?

Yes, and quite explicitly. Google's own guidelines for representing a business ban phone numbers or URLs that redirect to pages other than the actual business address, including pages on social media platforms, specifically in the website field.

For Instagram, Facebook and similar profiles, a separate section called 'Social profiles' exists, limited to one link per platform. That is where the Instagram link belongs, even though both fields end up showing on the same profile page.

Without a website of its own, the website field is best left empty, while the social profiles section correctly represents the Instagram presence. [Illia BizTech](https://illia-biztech.de/en/webdesign-dresden) sets both sections up correctly for Dresden businesses like this tailoring shop, and weighs in on whether a simple website of its own would actually be worth building.

A tailoring shop in Dresden without a website considers putting its Instagram link in the Google profile's Website field. Google's own rules rule that out explicitly.

Google's rules place social media links in the separate social profiles section, limited to one link per platform. Without a website of its own, the website field is best left empty.
