# The report puts a monthly value next to a yearly average

The same word sits behind both figures. They are not comparable.

We are a roofing firm.

Our report shows 40,500 for one term and 8,100 for the same term elsewhere, both labelled searches per month. On asking, it turned out one figure is a single month and the other a yearly average.

We read them side by side and worked out a multiple. Does that hold at all, and what should we be demanding of figures like these in future?

You have set two different measurements against each other. A monthly value and a twelve-month average answer different questions. One says how things looked recently, the other how they looked on average over a year.

Your 8,100 is probably not even the yearly average it was sold to you as. For one term our own analysis had 18,100 over twelve months and 8,100 over thirty-one months sitting next to each other. For July 2026 alone that same term came out at 40,500.

All three values are correct. It goes wrong only when two of them stand side by side and nobody notes which period applies.

So demand the period and the pull date for every figure in a report. We put both next to every figure at [Illia BizTech](https://illia-biztech.de/en/), because otherwise nobody can check the arithmetic.

A report shows the same word twice with a different figure beside it each time. A single monthly value and a twelve-month average answer different questions, so one term ends up with several correct figures at once. Work a multiple out of two of them and the gap you are using does not exist.

Every figure in a report needs two notes, the period it was averaged over and the date it was pulled. Without both, no figure can be checked or compared with another, and anyone who forms a multiple regardless is working with a gap nobody can evidence.
