# Can AI visibility be measured seriously at all?

We were promised a ranking in ChatGPT. It sounds too neat.

A provider is offering us a position measurement in ChatGPT, monthly, with a placement and a trend, and has shown us a sample table with one placement per month.

We fit windows, and we know that sort of thing from the search engine world. Where does he get that precision from in a chat?

Your doubt is well placed. There is no fixed position there of the kind a results list has, because the same question in two separate chats can be answered differently. Anyone selling a rank is selling an ordering that a chat does not have.

Something else is defensible, a sample with a disclosed method. Which questions get asked, in which services and how often, is settled before anything is run. Then it is a matter of counting how often a business comes up and what is said about it.

Three buyer profiles produce nine conversations, three per service, and the company name never appears. The result is a frequency backed by complete transcripts. No rank comes out of it.

Providers promise a monthly placement with a trend for ChatGPT, the way it is done in the search engine world. The same question in two separate chats can be answered differently, so no fixed position of the kind a results list has exists there. What can be measured is frequency across a sample settled in advance.

What separates a defensible measurement from a sales figure is whether you can check it. Ask any provider for the exact wording they used, the services they used it in, and the full text of what came back. If those three things are not on offer, there is nothing to audit and the number is theirs alone.
