Four years of an industry blog, two posts a month. Impressions steady, clicks halved, and management is asking what justifies two writing days a month.

We have run an industry blog on the company website for four years, roughly two posts a month. In Search Console the impressions have held steady, the clicks have fallen by about half since spring 2025, and there is now almost always an AI summary above the first result.

A customer told us recently that he found us through ChatGPT. We have no way of measuring that.

Management is asking whether two days of writing a month can still be justified, or whether the money would do more in advertising.

There is no puzzle in steady impressions with clicks cut in half. It is a description of what is currently happening.

People still find you, the answer is simply being served above you. Pew Research Center published these figures in summer 2025, from data gathered in March: on searches with an AI summary, users clicked a conventional result 8 percent of the time, against 15 percent without one. One percent clicked a source inside the AI answer itself. [The analysis is here](https://www.pewresearch.org/short-reads/2025/07/22/google-users-are-less-likely-to-click-on-links-when-an-ai-summary-appears-in-the-results/). One caveat matters. It is a snapshot. The German-language AI summary launched at the end of March 2025\. Your curve and that date line up.

The real news in your question is what your customer said. He found you, and you cannot measure it. That makes the click count a poor measure of the work, not the work a poor investment. More useful are things you can actually see: how many enquiries name where they came from, how often your company name is searched directly, whether the people who call already understand how you work.

What does change is which posts are worth writing.

A piece that explains a known thing in general terms gets replaced by the summary, and rightly so. A piece with your own numbers, a specific case, a clear position or experience that exists nowhere else is exactly what gets cited, because the machine has nowhere else to get it.

Rewriting old posts for this rarely pays. Those two days a month are better spent on two pieces containing something only you know. And advertising does not replace it: it buys attention for as long as you pay, while a citable piece keeps working on its own.

Part of what your customer said can be turned into something countable, and it takes two numbers your management can check for themselves. The first one comes from the enquiry form, a required field asking how someone heard about you, with the same question asked on the phone. After three months you have a distribution nobody argues with, and it is the only place where a recommendation from a chat assistant becomes visible at all, since a share of those visits arrives with no source attached to it.

The second one comes from Search Console. Separate the blog from the rest of the site and look at impressions for your own company name alongside it. More people searching for you by name while blog clicks fall means the writing still works, one step earlier than it used to. The figure I would keep out of the board report is the click count itself, because that is the number the summary above the results took away, and two days of work measured by it will always look like waste.
