We are starting work with an advertising agency. They sent a list of what they need, and one item is access to the ad account.

I asked how exactly that is given. The answer was that the simplest thing is to set the account up in their name and transfer it later if needed. That made me wary, but I have no argument to offer, because I do not know how this works.

We already have a Facebook and Instagram page, run by one of our own staff.

What is the right thing to give, and what should we not give?

Give partner access and keep the account.

Meta is built so that the supplier works from their own portfolio under their own login and receives only the rights the work requires. Ownership does not move anywhere in the process. No password needs to change hands at all. When somebody leaves the agency or the contract ends, access is simply revoked, and no password change is needed because nobody knew it.

Rights can be changed and withdrawn at any time. That is the central argument against the arrangement where the supplier sets the account up in their own name and promises to hand it over later.

On the Facebook and Instagram page, since one of your own staff runs it. The page and the ad account are two separate objects with separate ownership. To run ads the agency needs access to the account; it does not need administrator rights on the page. Keep the page for the same reasons.

The same principle applies to Google Ads, Search Console and the web analytics. All of them separate the owner from an invited user, and in all of them the supplier gets the second.
