# Our older city-center branch dominates the map, even though customers in Südvorstadt live closer to the newer one

A bakery chain with several branches in Leipzig finds that Google's map results almost always show the older branch, even for customers who live closer to a newer one.

We run a bakery chain with several branches in Leipzig, the oldest one is in the city center, a newer one is in Südvorstadt.

For customers who clearly live closer to the Südvorstadt branch, Google's map results still mostly show the city-center branch at the top.

Why does the older branch keep winning even where the newer one is geographically closer?

Several branches of the same brand inside one city automatically end up competing against each other for the same searches, Google gives no guarantee of routing a search to the geographically nearest branch. Practitioners describe this pattern quite plainly, an older, already-established branch often keeps its position even where a newer branch is objectively closer, since age and review count both feed into the assessment.

A related, documented case shows the flip side of the same problem. When one of two nearby branches closes, its built-up standing can't be transferred to the remaining one, since both are verified under separate, independent addresses. That branch has to be marked closed, and the visibility it built simply gets lost.

A working approach is pointing each branch to its own dedicated landing page instead of the shared homepage, and spreading internal links across the website evenly among all branches instead of unconsciously favoring the oldest one.
