# Our AI requests rise every month and they are counted by the user agent name

Steadily climbing figures, and nobody ever checked where the requests came from.

A tool parses our log and has shown a rising line of AI requests since the start of 2026\. The figures are presented as proof that our content is reaching assistants.

The counting appears to rest on the name in the user agent string alone. I see no check anywhere on the address the request came from.

Then the line is built on text anybody can type. Google puts a caution box around exactly this, saying the user agent string can be spoofed, and its page dated 20 March 2026 sets out the procedure for confirming a request.

What it describes is a reverse lookup on the accessing address taken from your own log. Alongside that, Google publishes address ranges a request can be checked against. Other vendors work the same way. OpenAI publishes a separate address file per robot, and so does Perplexity, which recommends basing firewall rules on those lists. Without that comparison your tool is counting polite self-descriptions.

A name in a user agent string is freely chosen text. Google records this plainly and describes the check as a reverse lookup on the accessing address.

Anyone deriving a visibility figure from a log file needs that step. OpenAI and Perplexity publish their addresses per robot in separate files, and Perplexity recommends building firewall rules on them. A tool that will not name the source it checks against is counting nothing that can be verified.
