# Our Search campaign was switched to AI Max in September without our say-so, can we undo it?

After September's automatic upgrade to AI Max, the open question is what changed and what a way back looks like.

We have run a plain Search campaign for our plumbing business in Sindelfingen for years, with broad match switched on at campaign level. In September an email from Google said the campaign would move to something called AI Max, and by now it has.

We looked through the account for a box to decline at the time and found none. Did one exist, and can we still go back?

There was no such box. Google announced that from 1 September 2026 it automatically upgrades Search campaigns that use automatically created assets or the campaign-level broad match setting. In your case it is the campaign-level setting that decides, the one you describe. A campaign using broad match only at keyword level fell outside the group.

The only thing that could be headed off at the time was the precondition. Switching those legacy features off before the cut-off kept a campaign out, and migrating voluntarily beforehand meant setting the options yourself.

Since the upgrade, search term matching is on by default, and campaigns with automatically created assets also get text customization. Google says the settings are configured to mirror the previous setup.

Going back is still possible. AI Max can be switched off again in the campaign settings, and individual features such as text customization can be disabled on their own. Google notes that switching it off disables all AI Max features and that performance may suffer, and that re-enabling it later restores the feature settings you had. The Dynamic Search Ads migration runs separately and begins in February 2027\.
