# Our vintage boutique in the Äußere Neustadt has stacked thirty hashtags under every Instagram post for years, reach has dropped since winter

Since December 2025 Instagram allows only five hashtags per post, anything beyond that is simply ignored.

For our vintage boutique in Dresden's Äußere Neustadt, our part-time helper has tagged roughly thirty hashtags under every Instagram post for years, everything from #dresden to #secondhandfashion. Since this winter reach has clearly dropped, with nothing else about our posting changing.

Did we simply end up repeating too many tags over time, or is something more fundamental going on?

It is most likely a fixed platform change. Instagram's own @creators account announced on Threads on 18 December 2025 that a reel or post now allows up to five hashtags only, down from roughly thirty before.

Anything beyond those five is, per that announcement, either ignored or never picked up at all. Repetition has nothing to do with it. For an account with a years-long habit of thirty tags, the change means most of its previous tags suddenly do nothing.

Five well-chosen tags now beat thirty scattered ones under this rule, if only because the extra ones no longer count at all. [Illia BizTech](https://illia-biztech.de/en/services/content-social) resets the tag selection to the new five-tag limit for Dresden shops like this boutique.

A vintage boutique in Dresden's Äußere Neustadt has lost Instagram reach since winter with nothing else about its posting changed. The cause is a specific platform rule.

Instagram's own announcement caps hashtags at five per post, down from a common thirty before. Tags beyond that limit simply stop counting at all.
