Let's Encrypt used to email us in advance. This time the website simply showed a security warning. * ##### Asked by SlowBeacon447 * ##### Asked on September 4, 2026 We rent out three holiday flats and have our own website with a booking enquiry form. Let's Encrypt always used to email us a few weeks before the certificate ran out, and my brother-in-law would renew it. When the emails stopped last year, he started noting the dates in his calendar. Last month one of those dates slipped past, and the browser suddenly showed a security warning. Let's Encrypt switched them off on 4 June 2025 and deleted every stored email address from its database. If you renew by hand, the first sign of a missed date is now the browser warning after the certificate has expired. Certificate lifetimes are shrinking too. Today a Let's Encrypt certificate lasts 90 days by default. From 10 February 2027 the default drops to 64 days, and from 16 February 2028 to 45 days. Renewing by hand every six weeks is hard to keep up, and Let's Encrypt expects renewal to be automated. Start by finding out who renews your certificate. If SSL comes with your hosting plan, the host usually renews it automatically. If someone installed it by hand years ago, that automation is often missing, and your host can usually switch it on. You'll find the expiry date in the certificate details, which open when you click the icon in the address bar. Sites that relied on the email to renew by hand now hit the browser's security warning with no notice at all. The default lifetime of a Let's Encrypt certificate is still 90 days. The default falls to 64 days on 10 February 2027 and to 45 days on 16 February 2028\. Website maintenance therefore starts by checking whether the host renews the certificate automatically or someone set it up by hand. A manual setup should move to automated renewal before the shorter lifetimes arrive.
