# What happens to the website if we end the relationship?

We are planning to end the relationship with our supplier. We are parting on good terms, with no conflict.

The site sits on his platform, he bought the domain, and the database and source files are with him as well. We simply use it and pay once a month.

Asking directly feels awkward while we have not finally decided, and we do not want to sour the relationship prematurely.

Will the site keep running at all, or does it go out with the contract?

The site should keep running, and that is something you check in advance. At the moment of parting it is too late to check.

Three things are needed. The domain is in the company's name. The hosting is in the company's name or can easily be transferred. The company has the site's source files and an export of the database. With all three in place, ending the relationship only means the site stops being developed. It still opens, the form still works, the access remains.

The dangerous arrangement looks different. The site lives on the supplier's platform, the domain is in his name, and there is no access to the source files. Then ending the relationship means losing the site entirely, and rebuilding it starts from nothing.

You can still ask without announcing your plans. An email along the lines of "we are updating our internal records, please send a list of the accesses and who is registered for what" reads as ordinary routine and signals nothing. What comes back tells you more about the arrangement than the contract does. If the list arrives without questions, everything is in order. An evasive answer is an answer too.

On the content separately, since it gets thought of last. Copy, photographs and articles are assets as well. It is worth knowing where the original photographs are held and whether you may go on using them once the work ends.
