A plumbing firm near Görlitz with the radius set correctly, still getting clicks from Hamburg and Köln. Shrinking the radius changed nothing.

We are a plumbing firm near Görlitz and we travel 30 km at most. The campaign has exactly that radius set, yet the location report shows clicks from Hamburg, Köln and on one occasion Austria.

In the first month roughly 380 euros of 900 went on places we would never drive to.

I then cut the radius from 30 km to 20 km, which changed nothing.

Our account manager says this is normal and that Google needs some room.

The radius is not your problem, which is why shrinking it did nothing.

Alongside the radius there is a second setting that decides who Google counts as being in your area. The default includes people who are somewhere else entirely but show interest in your area. Someone sitting in Hamburg searching for something tied to your town fits that description. The other option counts only people actually present in your area. Both are described on [Google's help page about location options](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/1722038?hl=de).

Do switch it, but with your eyes open: reach drops when you do, and Google says so itself. For a business that drives 30 km, that is not a loss, that is the whole point of the exercise.

Your account manager is right that the effect is normal. He just stops one sentence too early. Normal here means switched on by default, not unchangeable.

Two additions, one about the money and one about oversight. The 380 euros are gone and there is no getting them back.

What you can do is look backwards: the location report shows which places the clicks actually came from, and that turns into an exclusion list for the ones that keep appearing. Google has [its own page on keeping clicks from outside your target regions](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/9376662?hl=de). And a small thing that says more about how the account is being run than any report. The location setting has a change history. It shows whether anyone ever touched it. If nothing has been logged since launch, you know how much attention the campaign has had.
