# We want to film at a customer's site. What do we need to sort out first?

The client rang in the evening asking why his house was on our Instagram, even though we had left out the sign and the house number. Ten finished jobs have sat unused on a phone since.

We are an electrical contractor and we have finally understood that our finished installations are the best content we have.

On the last job the client rang in the evening and asked why his house was on our Instagram profile, even though we had left out the sign and the house number. We deleted the post and have not dared to film since.

Ten completed projects are sitting unused on a phone.

The call did not come because you forgot the house number. It came because you had not asked. That is the whole lesson of the episode.

Let me separate the three layers that get tangled here. Photographing a building from the public street is covered by [freedom of panorama](https://www.gesetze-im-internet.de/urhg/%5F%5F59.html), but only from public ways and only for the view visible from there.

The moment you are standing on the property, it is no longer copyright that governs but the owner's right over their premises, something [the Federal Court of Justice has ruled on](https://www.bundesgerichtshof.de/SharedDocs/Pressemitteilungen/DE/2010/2010241.html). And if people are in shot, you need their consent under [Section 22 KunstUrhG](https://www.gesetze-im-internet.de/kunsturhg/%5F%5F22.html).

Your case sits in the second layer: you are filming inside the system you installed, which means on his land. The client decides. And his complaint was not about law, it was about learning of it from Instagram.

In practice this is solved in one place, in the contract. A short clause saying you photograph completed work and use it in your own advertising, with a box to opt out. Anyone who objects ticks the box, and you know before the appointment rather than after.

Your own fitters are the second point people forget. They need to consent too, and that belongs in the personnel file rather than in a verbal yes on site.

For the ten jobs on the phone: ring the clients and ask. Where there are no people in shot and the house is not identifiable, it is usually a formality, and a call asking permission is received very differently from a call explaining something.

The evening call came because the owner found out from Instagram. People asked beforehand say yes almost every time, and the best moment to ask is the handover, when the installation is running and the customer is standing there pleased with it. Two sentences at the end of the appointment cover it, and it helps to offer something back too: show them the post before it goes out, and send the photos along. Most owners would like pictures of their own installation and have none.

For the ten projects on the phone, you can start as soon as two owners agree. A distribution board, a cleanly laid run, a close view of the finished work, none of that needs the house in the frame. What carries the post is the caption anyway, what the job was, what turned out to be awkward, how long it took. If one owner out of ten says no, nine are left.
