# Why can nobody quote a price for a website on the phone?

Three conversations, no result. One quoted a figure immediately without asking a single question, and somehow that did not inspire confidence either.

I have been ringing round suppliers for a website. I ask what it costs and get a clear answer from nobody.

Everyone says "we need to discuss it", "it depends on the requirements", and proposes an hour-long call. The third conversation ends with nothing, and I still do not know whether we are talking about ten thousand or fifty. One quoted a figure straight away without asking a single question, and somehow that did not inspire confidence either.

Why can nobody give at least a range?

An order of magnitude can almost always be given; an exact figure cannot, and the difference is not an unwillingness to answer.

Several things move the price that nobody knows in the first minute of a call. The number of pages and how many of them have a structure of their own. Whether the client needs to maintain content themselves. How many languages. Whether calculators, a customer area or a connection to other systems are needed. Whether the copy and photographs already exist. Getting a range out of one conversation is nonetheless realistic. Three or four questions about those points produce a band the price will very probably land in. An exact figure given without a single question is also a signal. Either that person has one template for every case, or the difference will be recovered later through additional work.

A quick way to get the conversation moving: show two or three websites you like and say what specifically you like about them. The estimate that follows is considerably more accurate than one based on a description in words. What makes up the price and what sums are realistic for the German market is set out in the [article on what a website costs](https://illia-biztech.de/en/blog/website-kosten-kleinunternehmen).

A range comes faster when you bring something into the call.

What helps most is one sentence about what a visitor should do on your site: call, send a form, book a slot, download a data sheet. From there a number can be built.

The item that moves the price afterwards is usually text and pictures, so raise it yourself. How many pages of text exist, whether there are photos from your own operation, who writes the new copy. While that stays open, every figure is an estimate and the gap shows up later in the invoice.

The hour-long meeting is no trick, and you can still set the frame. Say at the start that you need an order of magnitude today and will decide about the meeting after. Anyone who will not go along with that has answered you already.
