A letter with access details and a deadline, the site has been down for days and nothing reaches info@ any more. It started with an invoice sent to a dead mailbox.

A letter from DENIC arrived last week saying our domain is now managed by DENICdirect. It came with access details and a deadline.

As far as I can tell it started because an invoice from our old host went to an email address that stopped existing when our bookkeeper left. The site has been unreachable for a few days and nothing arrives at info@ either.

We definitely want to keep the domain. What we do not know is whether to pay, to move it, or to sit tight for now.

Sitting tight is the one option that actually costs you the domain. Everything else here can be put right.

TRANSIT means your previous provider stopped managing the domain and DENIC took it over directly. The domain is still yours.

What is missing is a provider to actually run it, which is why nothing resolves your address any more: the website and the mailboxes both hang off exactly that. The [DENIC FAQ on TRANSIT](https://www.denic.de/en/faq/faqs-about-transit/) sets out the state and the ways out of it.

The deadline in the letter is what everything turns on. Within it, moving to a new provider and deleting the domain are both free of charge. If you do not respond, DENIC terminates the contract without notice and deletes the domain, after which anyone quick enough can register it. For a domain your customers have used to find you for years, that is the most expensive possible ending.

So in practice you pick a provider now and order the transfer using the access details from the letter. Once the domain sits with a provider again, the site comes back as soon as the records are in place.

Be careful with the mailboxes. Whether the old mail still exists depends on whether your former host is still holding it, and that is a question for them rather than for DENIC. Anything sent to you during the outage will almost certainly have bounced back to the sender as undeliverable.

And the thing that actually caused this: the address that receives invoices and warnings should never depend on one person. A distribution list with two people on it would have prevented the whole episode.
