Jigs and gauges made in Zwickau, almost all of it for one customer. First place for the town search, one enquiry in six months, and that was a schoolboy asking about work experience.

We manufacture jigs and gauges in Zwickau, until now almost entirely for a single automotive customer. Since the news about the plant we have been looking for new customers, so in the spring we reworked the website and filled in the Google profile completely.

We now rank first for jig manufacture in Zwickau. In six months that produced exactly one enquiry, from a schoolboy asking about work experience.

The buyer we want to reach sits in Wolfsburg or Ingolstadt and certainly does not type Zwickau into a search box. Have we taken a wrong turn with local visibility?

You hold first place for a search almost nobody types. That is not a fault in the execution, it is a target that does not fit your business.

The reason lies in how local results work. Google builds them on [relevance, distance and prominence](https://support.google.com/business/answer/7091?hl=de), and distance is measured from the searcher. A buyer in Ingolstadt is not searching for a place, he is searching for a capability, a material, a tolerance. For him the local map is the wrong channel, which is why your position there can be flawless while nothing happens.

Check first whether anyone searches at all. Narrow technical terms in supply work often carry tiny volumes, and for this decision that is the most important number you can have. If barely anyone searches for what you do in a given month, search work stops being a growth channel and becomes a calling card for people who already know your name.

None of that means the town has to disappear from your page titles, but it does not belong at the front. What you can do goes first, and the town follows for whoever wants to check where you are.

What replaces local visibility in your case is unglamorous and effective: pages on individual manufacturing processes with tolerances, batch sizes and photographs of real parts, a listing in the supplier directories buyers actually search, and contact with the Saxon automotive supplier associations; the industry employs [more than 95,000 people in the state](https://www.wirtschaft-in-sachsen.de/de/vw-werk-zwickau-vor-dem-aus-zulieferer-warnen-vor-kahlschlag-in-sachsen/).

Alongside that, advertising aimed at your capabilities rather than your town.

And the hardest part when you have had one customer: you probably cannot name your strongest reference. Describe it without the name, through the type of part, the batch size and the requirement. A buyer reads out of that whether you can make his part.
