# Why one number can mean two very different terms | Illia BizTech

> Two entries reading 1,300 need not mean the same demand. The displayed averages sit on a rounding ladder, and only the monthly series tells them apart.

In the report they look identical. Only one of them gets recommended to us.

Our term list has two entries with the same figure, both at 1,300 a month, and only one of them gets recommended to us.

We sell office chairs online, and we would like to understand why that is, if the numbers are the same.

The two figures say less than they appear to. A keyword tool rounds the averages onto a fixed ladder of steps. In our own export not one value fell between 1,000 and 1,300, which makes the displayed number inexact. Two terms on the same step can be far apart in reality.

The figure alone settles nothing. What matters more is what each of the two terms reveals about the person searching. One can be a question asked before a purchase, the other a definition looked up for reference.

We had a pair like that in our own report. Two German terms both averaged 1,300, and the last monthly value of one of them was 1,000, below its own twelve-month average.

So ask for the series and for the intent behind the term before you settle on one. At [Illia BizTech](https://illia-biztech.de/en/) both are on the table before the choice is made.

A term list often holds two entries carrying the same figure. A keyword tool rounds the averages onto a fixed ladder of steps, which is why both read the same. The displayed number is an approximation, and where two terms under it diverge shows in the month-by-month series.

Volume is the easy half of the comparison. The harder half is who types each phrase and why. A buyer weighing a purchase and a student checking a definition can produce the same monthly figure and nothing like the same enquiries. Settle that before the volume, because a rounded average cannot settle it for you.
